The committee considered several replacements, including Indians, Eagles and Vikings, but settled on Huskies. But the idea was not universally accepted. According to Columns , there was a five-month debate over the choice, with the Daily editorializing against the Husky at one point. Gradually the idea won over the doubters. A turning point came at the game where the sports department announced its new mascot. Sometimes the Husky has a grim, determined demeanor, other times the dog is actually smiling.

I know I personally would rather see cute dog stuff in my timeline right now to get a break from the news. On April 8, he participated in a Zoom call with 12 other live mascots from colleges across the country.

The ensuing screen shot tore through Twitter like an adorable avalanche. Just hanging out with some new friends! And we were cracking up, because the whole time we were on this call he just sat there. We have a treat there, so it keeps his interest.

It was really, really cute. Dubs continues to do his part, woo wooing for a weary world. He gives the best hugs where he just jumps up and leans into you. His most popular episode appears to be somewhat disputed. According to one story, he was discovered in the basement of a Laurelhurst rooming house before the UW-Chicago game and was taken by Husky rooters to Chicago, but he never returned.

Some said he was simply abandoned in the Heartland.
