Posts: 23, Likes: 46, Joined: Jun 30, Oct 12, it makes no sense I get chopping the iam off of Will but why the b??? Why is John shortened to Jack? What does Jack mean sexually? Does Jack mean John? Who is the most famous Jack? Is Jack and Irish name? Who is ghost Charlie?

Is Charlie a full name? What does Charlie mean for a girl? Is Charles short for anything? Is Billy a nickname for William? Is Carlos Spanish for Charles? What does Carlitos mean in Spanish? Of his three brothers, only one was known by his given name, the other two were always called by their second Christian names, a fact that I only found out when I decided to discover my family history. So I think it's a whole other topic and probably one that makes our searches so difficult at times.

And just to confuse it even more, my wife tells me she had a Uncle Willie in Ireland and that's how he was always known as far as she can recall. Last edited by wayfarer; at PM. There were hundreds at the time but most have now died out. Many of the original names from which these nicknames were formed were Norman French names.

William is the anglisied version of Guillumme, an old French name. It appears that the changes were part of the English adapting them to their own language.
