Why three chambered heart

Muscles attached to the walls of each chamber undergo peristaltic contractions and force blood to flow forwards from chamber to chamber. The heart of an amphibian, such as a frog, has three chambers, one ventricle and two atria. Blood from the ventricle travels to the lungs and skin where it is oxygenated and also to the body. In the ventricle deoxygenated and oxygenated blood are mixed before being pumped out of the heart.

This is a very inefficient method when compared to the mammalian heart. Amphibians, however, have lower metabolisms hence they require less oxygen.

Requiring less oxygen puts less demands on the heart to deliver blood of high oxygen concentration. So a heart with three chambers is ideal for the needs of amphibians who could also absorb oxygen through their skin when moist. Mammals and birds, however, have a higher metabolic rate so must have a way of delivering more oxygen per litre of blood to the body than amphibians.

After picking up oxygen and getting rid of carbon dioxide in the lungs , blood returns to the heart and empties into the left atrium. The blood then enters the ventricle a second time and is pumped out to the body.

The second trip through the heart keeps blood pressure strong and blood flow rapid as blood is pumped to the tissues , helping the blood deliver oxygen more efficiently.

One of them is wind. They did, however, propose a series of surgical procedures that might reduce or eliminate the problem. When I heard about it, I thought my problems were solved. Again, my hopes were dashed. During the later part of last month, I was spending more time in hospital than out of it.

It became a repetitive process, whereby I would cough up copious amounts of blood and get myself hospitalised on a Sunday, and be given large amounts of tranexamic acid and fresh frozen plasma to stop the bleeding. The measures worked I was usually discharged on a Thursday, no longer coughing blood. By Saturday night and Sunday morning, the medication would have worn off and I would be coughing blood again. My parents have to take time off from work to look after me, and that weighs on me, too.

The hefty medical bills bother me, of course. I honestly could see no way out at that time. I had been coughing blood for more than a month and the drugs were barely keeping it at bay. The prospect of living in a hospital for extended periods of time was no longer bearable. Perhaps some people would consider this as giving up.

I disagree. At this point, I have accepted the fact that there is no cure for my condition presently. Maybe there will be a cure one day, who knows?
